So, I got this opportunity once
again in my spare time. Yeah, i have graduated but i haven't got any job yet.
Mom also didn't allow me to work in Indonesia so i went to HAI just to say
"HAI" to all friends. Unexpectedly,
they offered me to work there as freelancer for "Nge-BEAT bareng HAI
Skulizm Magazine". It was one and half month project (almost two months,
actually) from the end of October until mid of December in 2011. So, i worked there,
again! This time is different since i worked on the print team, before i worked
for online team. For your information, there are two teams in HAI: online
and printing. Online deals with the website, the one i did before, and printing
deals with the magazine. You know the HAI Magazine that you buy every Monday,
that's what printing team do! ;) It's totally different, though. You have to
be more careful to work in the printing team. My job is to interview all
students from 150 schools whom have been visited by HAI Skulizm and Honda
Beat. Oh ya, this project is a joint project between HAI and Honda Beat. So
our client is Honda Beat and we have to give them good service. I did the interview
by phone for the following months. Yes, it was ear-aching. You have to stick on
the phone, like customer service xp Well, i did it! Even though there were
manyyy challenges.
The second time i worked in HAI
was fun. I know how the media industry works, especially in Jakarta, the city
never ends. It's like work, work and work. But if you enjoy it, you don't feel
like you are working. One day, I stayed in the office to finish my job. I
slept, took a bath, having meal, there. It was like my home! Since I haven't finished my job at 12 AM so I think it’s better to sleep at office. Rather than, tomorrow
on newspaper’s headline appears “A Young Innocent Girl was Raped by A Guy”. At
the moment, I was working at 3 AM accompanied by Radio PPI Dunia. Suddenly my
friend, Eta, she’s the graphic designer, asked me to go out. Four of us: Eta, Me, Yanuar and
Danang went outside for a walk. Yes, we loved to kidnap children and ruined the city! x)) We
bought some snacks from seller across the street and also shampoo..for Danang,
the kos guy xD It was quiet enough though there were still some cars passed by. And i went back to office. I slept on the mattress, by the way. So i think every media company
has their own mattress. It's useful for those who have to stay up since
this is an unpredictable job. I mean you don't know when you have a
report assignment and you have to stand by at 5 AM in the morning since
you just arrive at 12 midnight. This time, I learned a loot..how to
work..especially about journalism world. How to write, how to choose good photo
for pages, and many more. And i also learned how to communicate with the
students from different area. Of course it would be different to talk with
Javanese and Sumatran. Students from Java usually more polite and soft spoken
whereas those from Sumatra speaks loudly and straightforward. Though i had many challenges, i made it through.

My best impression was when i called one student from Semarang. He was asking my twitter account during the interview. He was one of the nicest students i have called. And i even get used to HAI term to call somebody, "Hey, Boy!" Yeah, they use "Boy" instead of "Bro". I feel like i was in UUM (my university) since i have many friends from Sumatra that usually use term of "Boy" to call somebody.
Thanks a lot to Mba Ayu who helped me going (pretty) tough times. She told me how to write, how long should i write for this rubric, how to choose good photo and so forth. Then, I learned it all by myself. She was also a good friend who listen to her partner. Once, when i just got offer to study PhD, i had to submit the research proposal. That time, i had contract already with HAI as freelancer. I told her and she understood my situation then she allowed me to finish my research proposal first. She listened to my problems, anything, about this project. She's a good listener, indeed. She was like my Mom xD Annd, since this is the first work experience for me just after graduated, i can see how people at work. I can see the characteristic of people there. When you work, you know people who are serious, relax, the silence but a fast learner, and many more. You can see which one is really nice and just nice. The one who willing to help you and the one who is not. And, I love to work there though. I met many kind people xD Mas Gyo, who's on the same direction with me to home, yeay Bekasi people! Mas Ilham (Bekasi People too!), Kak Runi the co-worker beside me, Mba Ayu who sits behind me, Mas Teguh whom i always bother, Mate who was nice in the beginning, Kadek we shared the fresh-graduate suffering, Mas Muluk whom i always ask for the non available pictures, Uwie, Kak Niken, Agung, Eta, Yanuar (Batak), Idho (love you!), Nanda, Danang (Thank you for laptop!), Mas Ryo (the boss), Atha, Cietta, Cindy, Ryan, Lilyk, Uwie, Mas Boy, etc. Overall, Thanks HAI!
The Magazine!
See You Again Soon,
Chandini
